Quinta Brunson will star as Betty Boop in new feature film
Betty Boop is getting her own movie!
Boop-oop-a-doop! We have incredibly exciting news: there is a new Betty Boop feature film, being developed by and starring the great Quinta Brunson. Brunson's company, Fifth Chance Productions, is partnering with Mark Fleischer, grandson of Betty Boop creator Max Fleischer, to bring Betty Boop to life in what would be her first full-length feature film.
According to Variety, the film will follow Max Fleischer's perspective through the origin and evolution of Betty Boop, highlighting the artist's relationship with his character while navigating the pressures of being the creator of one of the first ever animation and pop culture icons.
In a statement, Brunson said, “Betty Boop is one of our nation’s most beloved cartoon characters, yet somehow still remains pleasantly niche. She has had a quiet but undeniable impact on culture for nearly a century. After Erin and I met with Mark and learned more about his grandfather’s creation of Betty, I realized there was a much deeper story to tell. One that could be explored in a way that feels refreshing, subversive, and timeless, much like Betty herself.”
Mark Fleischer also added to the statement, “When Quinta first approached me with the unique concept of a movie about the relationship of my grandfather, Max Fleischer, and his creation, Betty Boop, I was breathtaken. Quinta so embodies Betty’s love of life, intelligence, humor, sassiness, and compassion that the relationship between her as Betty and Max burst into life at its mere mention.”
Brunson is well known as an actress, comedian, writer, producer, and overall force of nature behind Abbott Elementary, which just got renewed for its sixth season. Mark Fleischer is the chairman and CEO of Fleischer Studios.
Betty Boop is one of the greatest cartoon characters of all time. She debuted in 1930 in Dizzy Dishes, and starred in over 120 theatrical cartoons throughout the 1930's. Betty Boop recently made her Broadway debut in the musical "BOOP!" and her global licensing includes brand collaborations in fashion, beauty, toys, collectibles, and more. She has solidified her place as a cultural icon and one of the most successful licensed characters ever.
We aren't even going to pretend to be unbiased: this movie sounds awesome. Quinta Brunson is literally perfect for Betty Boop. The logline is reminiscent of 2023's The Barbie Movie, and any movie that features a beloved classic cartoon character paired with nuggets of animation history sounds like a winner to us.
